The world has gotten more aggressive. New York has gotten more aggressive. People hop the turnstile often IN FRONT OF THE COPS. So placing UNARMED 'agents" in the system with only an OMNI reader and a device to give out fines will be as much of a deterrent as having Stevie Wonder.
You might deter one or two per bus ride, if the passenger even acknowledges the agent. You will get shouting matches and even fights. Guaranteed. That happens now if you politely ask someone to turn down their music.
And what about the kids who refuse to even use their OMNI card?
New York simply needs to cough up the money for police or agents with firearms. Period.
